Yeah, I teach yoga. I teach synchronization of breath and movement (please, yogis, exhale already!), the importance of ‘dristi’, or, single-pointed focus (get your eyes off the clock and the exit door), alignment (um, your shoulders are so severely tensed I can no longer find your neck), and a few kernels of wisdom passed down to me that I like to share (yoga is PRACTICE, not performance).
But the more I teach, the more I learn. From my students, who have loads of life experience and valuable lessons for this rookie yoga instructor.
Because we all have a lot to learn on this jagged path called life, I’m sharing a takeaway from each class I teach, beginning today. I’ll start with a few I tapped into my iPhone notes section over the past month:
- “I come here to fail!” And she loves that. Because at her corporate job, failure sucks. There are no second chances. No supportive, “hey, we all make mistakes and grow from them,” words of support. More like, “you stunk, and forget about that promotion.” So yoga practice is her playground. Her chance to fall, collect herself, conquer fear, get up, and try again. And again. And again until eventually, she’s stronger and happier.
- “Love and compassion. That’s my mantra this month.” A seasoned yogini who moves and breathes through practice with extraordinary fluidity shared with me after practice that during an extended balancing series she repeated this to herself to help push away the pesky ego trying to knock her spirit down. So what if she tips out of eagle? A mantra like that will keep this goddess solidly upright regardless of where her body lands.
